Help For The Easily Distracted Child

how to teach a distracted child

Before I started implementing Brain Breaks, our homeschool morning went something like this:

“Charity, we’re going to do Alpha Phonics. Can you please go get your book?”

Charity walks over to get her book and a pencil, and sits back down at the table. Refreshed from a good sleep and a hearty breakfast, she is focused and driven. She sounds out the first several sentences on the page. I can tell she’s giving 100%, but after 10 minutes of work, she loses her steam.

She starts guessing at words instead of sounding them out.

Her mind is elsewhere. She wants to know what toy her brother is playing with, if it’s time for me to feed Anna, and what we’re having for lunch.

She drops her pencil three times in row and has decided it’s more fun to stand on the rung of the chair than sit on it.

She twirls her hair and asks a million questions about everything except what sound “au” makes.

This behavior used to drive me nuts. “How in the world do kids in school sit for 6 hours, when she can’t concentrate for 10 minutes?!

Then I read The Ultimate Guide To Brain Breaks by Heather Haupt and our lives changed. There is non-medicinal help for the easily distracted child that is fun and effective!

I’m no longer frustrated by her short attention span. Now I look out for signs of disinterestedness because I know what they mean and what to do about it.

If her eyes have glazed over and can’t focus, if she starts to get disruptive or over emotional, stares out the window, asks questions that have nothing to do with the subject at hand, fidgets incessantly without making headway, or takes forever to complete a task, in most cases, she simply needs a Brain Break!

A Brain Break is an activity that gets oxygen moving to the brain which stimulates a person’s ability to focus. If your child exhibits any of the symptoms mentioned above while they’re trying to study, it’s time for a recharge and the 60 activities included in The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks will help them do just that.

If our daughter is becoming antsy or distracted, I’ll say, “Okay, it’s time for a Brain Break!” and then read off one of the suggested activities which we do together. Our 2-year-old loves to join us for this part of “school”, and I mentally check off “phys-ed” from our list of subjects.  😉

The Brain Breaks could be anything from Toe Writing to the Billy Goat Bump (which are all explained in the eBook). In the picture above, the kids are performing “‘X’ Marks The Spot” on page 36 of The Ultimate Guide To Brain Breaks. (Yes, those are pajamas!).

I cannot believe how much just 5 minutes of intentional movement can resurrect her ability to focus! We’ve been using the The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks for three weeks now, and it has been the most productive segment of our school year in a month that usually finds me burnt out.

Brain Breaks are fun, easy, short, and best of all, they work. We can get through 2-3 hours of focused study every morning as long as we implement a few brain breaks along the way. I’m so thankful for this resource and heartily recommend it to every homeschool family (especially if you have boys and/or young children), and every teacher who manages a traditional classroom setting.

The beauty of Brain Breaks is that you can start implementing them and revolutionize your home school todayThe Ultimate Guide T o Brain Breaks keeps learning enjoyable for both teacher and student. It will be the best $7.99 you’ve ever spent.
